Bird Nests

We are slowly working our way through the Live 'N Learn Folder based on Birds and are learning things we never knew. Yesterday, we discovered that birds' eggs do not all look the same. I thought my kids knew this but apparently they did not. Not only do they not all look the same but they come in a surprising array of shapes, sizes, and colors.

Did you know that an emu eggs is naturally a dark green color and actually have three layers of color: dark green, teal, and white? In fact, because they have three layers of color, they make a cool carving medium. Check out this carved emu egg.

Last night, my kids were bugging me to do our edible craft that goes with this study. They were already in their jammies but we did it anyway. I love that "school" can happen any day or any time of the day when you homeschool.

Here are the kids forming the birds' nests that we made. They are constructed of chow mein noodles and melted chocolate chips. Then they are formed in foil lined muffin tins. After they are formed, you can add "eggs" of your choice and marshmellow chicks. We used white chocolate covered coffee beans (they were the right shape and size and my husband could enjoy the unused beans), but you can use white chocolate covered raisins or jelly beans as well. We didn't add the chicks because they aren't out for Easter yet. You can get the recipe at Enchanted Learning; this is one of the free items there.

Here are the kids enjoying their treats. Once the coffee beans are removed (yuck!), they are so yummy. Crunchy chocolate! I've already eaten three of them and there's seven left....somebody help me!

We do school in our jammies all the time. Evan usually changes from pjs to pjs at bedtime if we haven't been anywhere all day. LOL

The carved emu egg was so neat. I've heard of a variation of the birds nests that uses toasted coconut. I'd put Mini Robins Eggs in mine...those are so addictive! I'm glad the kids are having fun learning about birds :)
