Tacoma Kids Weekly - Week of May 5, 2008

Sorry for the late list. As I mentioned in a previous post, I was out of town without internet access. Then I was hit with an unexpected medical issue that delayed the last further. There's tons of choices over the weekend, thanks to Mother's Day. My pick would be the Maritime Festival in Seattle; I've been wanting to take my kids to the Odyssey Maritime Discovery Museum, which looks really interesting. My second choice (2nd only because we've been there a few times already) is the Pioneer Farm.

In celebration of its 5th birthday in its new building, Tacoma Art Museum is offering $5 admission today. The nearby Washington State History Museum and Museum of glass are offering $5 tuition today. (Information per Seattle's Child, not confirmed by me)

Kidsquest Children's Museum in Bellevue is free from 5pm to 8pm every Friday night. Free Fridays are a great time to visit a new place.

Not as inexpensive as other events that I list, but it looks like it could be fun. Encore Theater is now showing A Pirates Life for Me. Show times are 7:30pm Fridays and 5:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $15 for adults, $11 for military/seniors/teens, $8 for preteens, and $6 for children 6 and under.

The Backyard Wildlife Festival is happening in Tukwila this Saturday from 9am and 5pm. The event includes craft vendors, nature education, workshops, music, a kids' area (bouncy rides, crafts, Ranger Rick appearance), and a process of the species (people dressed as wildlife) at noon. Admission is free. It looks like they have quite a few things going on and it could be a great educational experience for kids.

It is time for Mom and Me at the Zoo (Pt. Defiance Zoo). This special day at the zoo for moms and their children include games, entertainment, arts and crafts, and face painting. Pick up t-shirts at Macy's (in the children's department) before the event for $10 and wear them to the event for free admission to the zoo between 10am and 3pm. Quantities are limited.

Take a scenic train ride with your kids for Mother's Day weekend. Snoqualmie Valley Railroad's scenic 65 minute round trip rides depart from Snoqualmie or North Bend. Mom's are free Saturday and Sunday when accompanied by a paying child. Adults/teens are $10, children ages 2-12 are $7, and children under 2 are free. Personally, I would depart from Snoqualmie so I could tour the depot, enjoy the ride, and then visit the Falls up close on my way home.

The Maritime Festival Family Fun day takes place from 11am to 5pm in the Port of Seattle (pier 62/63 in downtown Seattle and pier 66 in the Harbor Marina). Events include a chowder cookoff, boat building contest, free harbor tours (Argosy Cruises), sea-air rescue demonstration, kids events, tugboat races, stories of the sea, and a container ship full of family fun. Free admission to the Odyssey Maritime Discover Museum is also part of the festivities. Visit the link and scroll down to read all of the events of the day.

The Wooden Boat Festival is taking place in Olympia from 10am to 6pm today and 11am to 5pm Sunday with old and new wooden boats on display, arts and crafts, entertainment, and food.

Pierce County Heritage Days are taking place at the Pioneer Farm Museum from 11:45am to 4pm today and tomorrow. Event is free. Tours last 1.5 hours long and include a hands on experience with pioneer life. Kids can try on pioneer clothes (aprons and bonnets for the girls, vests and hats for the boys), kneed bread, cut cabbage, grind coffee, card wool, wash clothes, hunt for eggs, visit the animals (chickens, pig, cow, goats), jump in the hay, see a blacksmithing demo, cut wood, strip bark off the wood, go on a wagon ride, and many other fun activities. My kids LOVE this place. We've been there three times and they always beg to go back.
