Today was the first day of the new school year for us, and it didn't go as planned. Oh, no, it didn't!
First of all, I was completely unprepared. Well, maybe not completely, but I certainly don't have all of my planning done. Nor is my school room clean and organized. But I stayed up until midnight making sure I had what I needed to make today...just today...a successful day. Well, except for that all important thing called sleep and being well-rested.
So, we started out the day quite well. I got up early, showered, got dressed, folded and put away a load of laundry from the dryer, started another load, and cooked breakfast. Great start, especially when you consider I am NOT a morning person.
Just before school was planned to start, I tried to get the bigs' literature selection loaded onto their Kindles, but Mika's wasn't working. I contacted Amazon, and an hour later we had it working.
Having resolved the Kindle issues, I got the littles started on the dining room table playing with some wooden inch cubes while I got the bigs started in the school room. I handed them some organizing forms and their assignments for the day. Then I went back to the littles.
Josh did very well with his first day of school. We did the first lesson of Phonics Pathways. He colored his cover page for Literature Pockets Nursery Rhymes and his Plant log book. We did the first lesson of Math-U-See Primer. And we did some fine motor skills practice. Half way through all of that, we lost power. Yes, we lost power. We did finish most of our school work in the dark, but not everything I had planned.
Then we called it good, ate a quick lunch, and headed to the Western Washington Fair to continue "school" there. Each kid was given $20 to spend so they (well, the big kids) had to budget their money and make some choices. We also went through the new Rainforest Adventures and got to see some great animals. Sam and I even held a scorpion, while Maddie touched it. We also went through Your Bodies. I wanted to see the similar Bodies Exhibit but missed it, so I was thrilled with the chance to see this similar exhibit.
It was a long, but good day even if it didn't go as planned.
