World War II

We're just finishing up a four week unit of World War II.  I found some great resources and enjoyed learning some new things along with the kids.  Here's what we read:

Literature

Diary of a Young Girl: The Definitive Edition
Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two*
Hiroshima Diary: The Journal of a Japanese Physician, August 6-September 30, 1945*
Between Shades of Gray
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (only Mika read this one)

Nonfiction

America in the 1940s (Decades of the Twentieth-Century America)
DK Eyewitness Books: World War II
Auschwitz: The Story of a Nazi Death Camp
Japanese American Internment Camps
The Anne Frank Case: Simon Wiesenthal's Search for the Truth
Left for Dead: A Young Man's Search for Justice for the USS Indianapolis*

Websites
Digital History

Movies
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Schindler's List
Masterpiece Theater: Diary of Anne Frank

Field Trips

Museum of Flight (has WWI and WWII exhibits)

The items marked with an asterisk are still in process.  We'll be giving World War II a fifth week before moving on so we can finish up these books.  Mikaela and Sam are also working on research projects of their choice which will take them a few weeks to work on.  Mikaela has chosen to cover the concentration camps in Germany, focusing on the Jews before, during, and after the war.  Sam is focusing on the atomic bomb.
