Unpredictable Reactions

Sam just ate a pear and this was the reaction he had: redness with itchy bumps. He's eaten pears, both canned and fresh, many times before without having a reaction.

He's had this rash happen a few other times before this. The previous reactions were after eating smoothies. The smoothies were made of various fruits. The combinations around that time were:

pomegranate juice, orange juice, blueberries, strawberries and bananas
grape juice, blueberries, strawberries, and bananas
orange juice, peaches, vanilla

At that time, we thought it was citrus because the itchy rash happened after the smoothies with OJ. But then another day, a week or two later, he reacted after drinking apple juice. And now, after eating a pear.

I don't see a pattern except that it is all fruit. I don't know what this is or how dangerous it might become or which fruits are safe for him to eat.

My sons get that whenever they get ketchup on their faces. I don't know if it's from the acid in the tomatoes or from the naturally occurring sugars, but it looks very similar.

Does it itch? How long does it stay like this? Does it go away on it's own or do you have to put something on it?
BEAUTIFUL EYES!!

My first thought was the acid in the fruit, but, as you know, apple juice and pears aren't acidic. The next common denominator would be sugar. Could he be having a reaction to the natural sugars in the fruit?

He's definitely allergic. My daughter has this reaction to pineapples. Keep Benadryl nearby.

My daughter gets the same way. I believe it is the acid/sugars in the fruit. Pancake syrup also gives her this reaction. I just make sure she has a damp cloth to wipe with after every couple of bites.
