I Know I Named Him That But...

Now that Sammy has reached the ripe, old age of seven, he insists that we call him Samuel. He no longer wants to be called Sammy or even Sam. It must be Samuel.

Here's the problem. I HATE the name Samuel. Yes, I know it is the name I gave him but I never intended to called him by his given name. I had every intention of calling him Sammy until he got too old (and seven is certainly not too old yet). Then I'd switch to Sam.

Last night when I slipped and called him Sammy, he vehemently reminded me that his name is Samuel. I suggested we go to court to have his birth certificate changed to Sammy.

So, don't be surprised if this next baby ends up with a common nickname on his/her birth certificate rather than a real name.

hi there! that's funny :O).... I was just browsing thru some of the hearts for homeschooling blog roll and found ya.... I have a daughter who I swore I would never ever call her by a nickname, before I had her everyone was calling her "Gabby" as they rubbed my belly & I would say... her name is Gabrielle! ... and wouldn't ya know about one week before I had her I was rubbing my own belly saying, "Okay GABBY you can come anyday now." and everyone just laughed and stared at me as I did what I said I'd never do! and still to this day I call my dd Gabby!

Nice to meet another homeschooling mom in the blog world.
God bless!

One of my friends is officially named Andrew, but everyone--including his parents--call him Ike.

I have yet to hear a good explanation as to why.

We have used so many nick names with our kids that at one point my youngest was confused. When asked what his middle name was, he said "monkey man". For the most part though, now that they are older, we call them by their full first names without resorting to shortened versions or nicks.

Please pardon my completely off-topic comment. But, I just found your post regarding CVA. I would love to e-mail you to get more info. I am new to WA, but not to homeschooling. My previous state did not have any public funding for homeschooling. I have been on my own for 6 or so years. Anyway, I would like to ask you a few questions, but I could not find an e-mail address on your blog. Thank you so much.
